Rock Creek Outfitters is operated by Robert E. Thompson, the
owner of the 2257 acre Thompson Ranch, located two miles southwest of
Rand, Colorado in the North Park region of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains in
Game Management Unit 17. The ranch’s elevation ranges from 8560 to 8920
feet. The ranch spreads across two valleys: Rock Creek on the east and McKinnon Creek on
the west. Lodge pole pine and aspen forests, hay meadows, and grazing
range (sage, willow, and native grass) make up the terrain. Routt
National Forest borders the ranch to the south. Cattle ranches border on
the east and west sides with State Highway 125 on the north.
The ranch is in the southern part of Jackson County about five miles
from the Continental Divide in the center of some of Colorado’s finest
game country. Elk, deer, moose, antelope, bear, and coyote are present
on the ranch with the majority of the hunting concentrated on elk but
other hunts are available with proper licenses.
To escape the hunting pressure on the Routt National Forest bordering
our southern boundary, elk herds numbering 10 to 300 head will
congregate on the pine and aspen covered mountains between our two
creeks. Light hunting pressure from stands 4–6 hunters per season, a
dark timber “sanctuary” for daytime bedding, and good grazing on the
meadows help to attract and keep game on the ranch
Robert E. Thompson, licensed and bonded Colorado Outfitter #1601 and an
additional guide are dedicated to providing a top quality hunting
experience. The transport is ranch pick-ups and you won't eat on fine
china, but we will work hard to give you a good hunt. You may bag a
trophy in the 350 class or a four-point bull, but for our price, we are
the best deal around.
Rock Creek Outfitters, LLC specializes in elderly and/or less fit
hunters, who cannot handle the rigorous physical stress of hunting at
high altitudes. The private land ranch hunts are all from stands, shoot
shacks, or modified pick-up cabs. These cabs have been removed from
their frames, camouflaged, and are excellent protection in cold, windy
weather.

Lodging and Meals
The original ranch house has been converted into a hunting lodge with a
full-time cook and household help. The hunting lodge accommodations
consist of four bedrooms (each sleeps 2–3), three bathrooms (2 showers
and 1 tub), kitchen, dining area, laundry, and living and game rooms.
Fully guided hunts include all meals. Breakfasts and dinners are served
in the dining area while lunches are packed fresh daily.
The options offered our hunters are:
1. Muzzle Loader (Black Powder)
Elk
2. First Season Premier Elk Hunt
3. 2nd. 3rd, 4th Season Elk Hunts
4. Combined Elk and Deer Hunts
5. An economical Do-It-Yourself Public Land Hunt
6. Deer Hunt
7. Non-hunting friends and spouses can accompany a hunter for a fee of
$75.00 per day.
To provide a quality hunt, our maximum number of hunters is
six per season. The guides take hunters to stands on the ranch each
morning and pick them up in the evening. There are nine stands, four
are pickup cabs and the others are shoot shacks. The stands are
accessible and comfortable which works well for older and/or physically
challenged hunters.
